Dear Parents and Families

Term 4 is always a strange time of the year; we are busy finalising one year, with exams, assessments, assemblies and formals; and, at the same time, we have an eye to 2023 through orientation programs for VCE and VCE Vocational Major (VM), Step Up later in the term for Years 7 to 9, and Grade 6 orientation.  It is a time of intense planning for these programs, as well as in terms of our strategic directions as a school for 2023.

Congratulations to all of our students who have completed or are in the process of completing, exams and semester tests.  We wish you well for your results.  I also want to acknowledge the dedication and expertise of our VCE and VCAL teachers and support staff as they supported and guided our Year 12’s through their coursework, and for providing them with every possible opportunity to transition to a high quality pathway of their choice.  Our heartfelt thanks to each of them.

Congratulations, also to…..…

Mr Victor Vu and his partner on the arrival of their baby boy, Rex.  We wish them all the very best of health and happiness together as a family.

And to Wilfred Oo of Year 10 who has been accepted into the University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program – Class of 2024.  This is an outstanding achievement for Wilfrid as the University of Melbourne reported that they “received over 1300 applications and were highly impressed by the academic performance and community involvement demonstrated by students”.

The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program designed to support high achieving Year 11 and Year 12 students.  Students selected as Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholas will become part of the supportive University community and peer network through a tailored program of events and activities.  These students work with the University over their final two years of secondary school to help these future leaders reach their potential.

A great deal of effort went into the submissions for applications and endorsements for this program by both the Year 10 students who applied and also Becky Annetts and Sean Ryan, the Middle Sub School staff involved.  Congratulations to Wilfred on successfully applying and well done to the other applicants.  These applications provide good experience for students and develop skills that are transferable beyond school.

Welcome……..

We are really pleased to welcome Mr Shane Ferlazzo to our school community as our newly appointed Maintenance Officer.  Shane will commence work here on 5 December and brings a wealth of experience from previous roles in this field, We wish Shane well for his time at St Albans Secondary College.

We also welcome Angelique Imierowicz into the Individual Needs department.  Angelique is new to the education sector and brings all the necessary skills to be an integral part of the team.  We wish Angelique the very best during her time here at the College.

Facilities Projects

Our School Council is committed to ensuring that students and staff have access to the highest quality facilities in classrooms, offices, and in external spaces.

To this end, we continue to develop and fund redevelopment and renovation works across the school.  Over the last few weeks, the senior Science prep rooms on the C Floor have been completely refurbished with better storage and safer chemical preparation facilities for staff and students.

Work will commence over coming weeks on renovating the Wood Technology room to create easier, safer access to machinery and tools for students; on construction of new garden beds, seating and shade; and on completing the outdoor chess sets.

We are also considering options for a renovation or rebuild of the Performing Arts Centre.  Initial sketches and pricing for both have been developed, and we are investigating funding for this.  As you can appreciated, it is a major project and is part of our medium-term facilities planning.

Class of 2022 Farewell

It was wonderful to have a final farewell for the Class of 2022 at Luxor Receptions Centre on Thursday 17 November.  There was alot of dancing and celebrations as the students said goodbyes to their class mates and teachers.  We would like to wish all the students the best in their future endeavours, whether this is education and training or employment.  Also, good luck to the VCE students who will receive their results on Monday 12 December.  Remember the Senior Sub School team and Careers team are here to provide support and advice to all the studens who may need it.

Exams, Orientation, Semester Tests and Reports

We are right in the midst of exam and orientation time at the College.  Year  9 Semester Tests have just finished, and Year 10 exams finish next week.  Year 10 students will commence Year 11 Orientation for both VCE and VCE VM on Thursday 24 November.

Reports for Years 7 to 10 will be available on Tuesday 13 December.  As always, Year Level Coordinators will be in touch with families where there are concerns with these reports.  If you have any questions please contact your child’s YLC.

Step Up and End of Year Activities

We are fast approaching the end of the year and with that comes a range of experiences for students, including opportunities to have a taste of their Year Level for 2023.  The Step Up program will run from Thursday 8 December until Monday 12 December. All classes will operate on the timetable for their next year and will be provided classes that will give them some front loading to assist prepare students for  the expectations and program for their next year.

Please note that Monday 12 December is the last school day for Year 9 students. They will finish at the usual time on that day.

Activities week runs for Years 7 and 8 over a 4 day program from Tuesday 13 to Friday 16 December.  Students will work through a range of activities provided by Key Learning Areas, Wellbeing, The Junior Sub School and Careers. It is a traditional part of our calendar and provides opportunities to do some physical activities, be creative, think about future pathways, and take part in challenges and problem solving.  We will provide some photos taken during these activities for the next newsletter.

Junior School Report

Read Time: ( words)

Our 8J students had a more eventful camp than usual.  On the afternoon of 13 October, the students were returning to the Strathbogie camp after a day spent in Benalla.  The weather had closed in and the local area and received a lot of rain.  The students had returned to Euroa from Benalla and the teachers checked the road conditions with local authorities.  At that time the road was open and other than taking a high degree of care with wet conditions, everything was fine to climb the hill back to camp.  The students were only a few kilometres from the campsite when a fallen tree blocked their route.  Several alternative routes were tried, and each time a tree blocked their path.  At this point the teachers enlisted the help of a local farmer.  The farmer worked tirelessly for several hours to remove fallen trees and at one point used his tractor to help get the bus through a tricky spot.  By the time the students made it back to camp it was well past the usual time for lights out and in fact, the electricity was off!

At all times the students were calm, composed and assisted the teachers.  They followed instructions and showed a resilient mindset.  Whilst the events of camp weren’t planned, they have made for some good stories and should provide the students with confidence if they are in a similar situation.

Year 12 VCAA Exams

The Year 12 VCAA external examinations have almost concluded for the year. Thank you to our experienced VCAA exam supervisors and the Senior Sub School team who ensured the smooth running of the exams. Thank you also to our Year 12 VCE students who attended all their exams on time and were always well prepared. We wish them the best of luck with their final results, which will be released on December 12, 2022.

Western Health Partnership

On Thursday 20 October, a group of Year 12 VCAL students attended the Rehabilitation Ward at Sunshine Hospital to deliver their complex project. In consultation with the patients and occupational therapists, the VCAL students built an outdoor hardwood table and bench, and created ‘nature inspired’ artwork and mosaic. The students did a fantastic job, and the hospital staff were appreciative of their efforts. The students’ work will contribute to creating a warm, welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment for the hospital community.

Year 11 VCAL Community Project

On Wednesday 26 October, the VCAL students ran a fundraiser to support the Interact Club to reach their financial target for Project W – WASH for Education. The students planned, organised and ran stalls selling homemade sushi rolls, popcorn, barbeque, donuts, truffles, homemade toffee apples, a raffle and more. They raised a total of $1,090.75. All proceeds raised will go towards Project W to provide clean and safe drinking water to schools in Cambodia. Thank you to everyone who supported the cause.

Transition from VCAL to the VCE VM

I

As the school year draws to a close and the alumni sessions wrap up, we have space to give time to reflection and, bom, bom, bom… data collection.  Every year I create an Achievement Pack which outlines every session, event, and alumni contribution.  This pack enables us to gauge growth and impact, and also, to give ourselves a little pat on the back.

As demonstrated by the infographic below, our program has truly blossomed in 2022 and the impact the program has had on students is reflected in the record number of Year 12 students agreeing to be included in the alumni community.  So next year, I expect, the alumni program is going to be off the charts!

SCOPE Sessions

Over the course of two weeks, the Advance class attended sessions brought to us by Jake who is a presenter from SCOPE. SCOPE is Australia’s largest and most trusted disability service provider, which supports thousands of people with different disabilities including intellectual and physical. We have attended two sessions so far and our third one will take place on 23 November, which we are so excited about, especially since another presenter from SCOPE will be joining us! All three sessions allow our class to work towards meeting the Advance learning modules.

Our first session, named ‘Understanding Disability & Diversity’ was essentially an introduction to learning about the wonderful world of disability, where we completed a number of activities that accessed our prior knowledge and developed ideas and questions we wanted to explore. We were educated about the social model of disability, through watching a variety of videos that delved into the first-person experiences of individuals with a disability. Furthermore, we brainstormed ideas about how to improve a variety of environments, to make it more accessible for those with disabilities. Some ideas included rearranging the organisation of products in a grocery store, for easier accessibility.

In our second session titled ‘Communicating Successfully With Others’, we learnt Auslan, which is a shortened term for ‘Australian sign language’. We watched multiple videos about individuals using sign language as daily communication. Our class learnt how to spell our names and a range of other simple sentences and words, using sign language. In addition to this, we participated in a quick activity that gave insight into how people rely on using Auslan, which included making our own communication board. A communication board is used by a number of individuals, in order to easily communicate, as they may struggle with speech difficulties. The board consists of a variety of symbols, images, and simple everyday language like ‘yes’ and ‘no’. In terms of how to use the board to accurately communicate one’s intention, the user can point towards, gesture or blink for the different images or words, essentially explaining what they want to convey.

Our last SCOPE session in two weeks time is titled, ‘See The Person’. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next, and what more we can learn about the wonderful world of disability.
